NEW YORK HORSESHOE CRAB RESEARCH CENTER
The New York Horseshoe Crab Research Center (aka. Horseshoe Crab Center) is one of the world leading research center of the horseshoe crab. The center is internationally famed for the world largest collection of the historical artifacts, cultural documents, educational materials, illustrations, and artworks related to the Japanese reincarnation mythology of the samurai and horseshoe crab (Hata-no-takebun - Kabuto-gani Mythology). Generally speaking, the horseshoe crab is the most researched marine organism due to the Limulus Amebocyte lysate (LAL). LAL is made of the blood cell of the horseshoe crab’s unique copper-based blue-colored blood. LAL is used worldwide to test the quantified safety level of the injectable drugs and biomedical devices. All the vaccines and antibiotic drugs (including ones for AIDS) use for human and animal are tested with LAL. The main reason why Americans consider the horseshoe crab so valuable today is simple. It is all about Money. The horseshoe crab's blood is sold for $60,000/gallon today (as of February 5, 2014).

Japanese Samurai Warrior's Ceremonial Reincarnation Mask (Horseshoe Crab Mask)
Yamada created several dozens of acrylic paintings on the carapace of the Atlantic Horseshoe Crab, salvaged at the waterfront in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York. Based on the widely believed religious doctrine of Rinne Tensei (reincarnation of life) of Shinto and Buddhism in Japan, the warrior's helmet crab (Kabutogani) are believed the reincarnation of the prominent individuals and famous samurai warriors (such as Hata-no-takebun, who served for the second Prince of His Majesty Emperor Godaigo) at major battles at the sea and beaches in Japan. (Kabutogani can NOT be and should NOT be mixed up with Heikegani.) Dr. Takeshi Shimizu Yamada was born in the house of Samurai Warriors - Yamada clan and Shimizu clan (major samurai warrior clan/ruling elite class). This sea creature always fascinated him since he was a little child, mentally, spiritually and religiously. With these background, it was natural for him to originate and create these very special artworks expressing his deep respect and gratitude to those courageously fought at the battles for the people and nation in the ancient time. There are genuine Samurai artworks created by the real descendent of the Japanese samurai. (Click for the bigger picture and descriptions below.)
Princess Otohime of the Dragon God's Palace Under the Sea, Riding on the Back of the Warrior's Helmet Crab, Excavated from the Palace of Ocean
This series of these artworks created by Dr. Takeshi Yamada represent his interpretation of Urashima Tarō (浦島 太郎). Urashima Tarō is a Japanese legend about a fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded for this with a visit to Ryūgū-jō, the palace of Ryūjin, the Dragon God, under the sea. He stays there for three days and, upon his return to his village, finds himself 300 years in the future.

Increasing the Social Awareness of the Horseshoe Crab
Since Takeshi Yamada was appointed for the Executive Assistant Director of the Horseshoe Crab Center in 2002, he dramatically upgraded the operations of the Public Relations there. He led their effort in four major areas; websites, interactive public art performances, educational exhibitions, and media exposures. The center printed and distributed over 5,000 posters, postcards, flyers, fine art prints, and refregerator magnets featuring Dr. Takeshi Yamada's beautiful artworks, inspired by the horseshoe crab. Dozens of the images of his horseshoe crab artworks were featured in multiple fine art websites of Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Arts Council, Brooklyn Streetcar Artists Group, Flickr, etc. Information of Yamada's website(s) about samurai - horseshoe crab reincarnation mythology and horseshoe crab artworks was posted for over 1,500 youtube videos in English and Japanese languages internationally (as of June 2014). Also, Dr. Yamada personally engaged hundreds of art performances with horseshoe crab carapaces, his tailored horseshoe crab costumes, jewelry and accessories throughout New York and Delaware. The horseshoe crab artworks of Dr. Yamada were frequently used for Dr. Yamada's educational art exhibitions about the conservation of the wildlife and our natural environment . With these, the images and stories of the horseshoe crab are widely seen today in numerous magazines, newspapers, blogs, and even multiple TV shows in Canada and the United States. The Horseshoe Crab Center also houses the world's largest collection of the historical documents, cultural artifacts, educational materials, and artworks related to the Japanese Reincarnation Mythology of the Samurai (侍, さむらい, サムライ, サブライ, サブラヒ) and the Horseshoe Crab (カブトガニ, かぶとがに, 甲蟹、兜蟹、鱟魚, 鱟, Kabutogani. Kabuto gani ≧ 武文蟹, タケブンガニ, Takebungani, Takebun gani, Takefungani, Takefun gani). Extensive researches and presentations on this subject have been undertaken by Dr. Takeshi Yamada. which were never done before in such a multi-dimensional scale, magnitude, and extended period of the time, even by any horseshoe crab research organizations, centers or museums in Japan or the United States whatsoever, even as of this year 2014. New reference materials on this subject have been added regularly. Yamada's research works of the samurai-horseshoe crab reincarnation mythology as well as other samurai-crab reincarnation legends/mythologies of numbers of human-faced crabs in Japan were inspired by the Professor of the literature, Sunao Takoshima.

Hatanokakebun (秦武文) was the most capable and trusted elite samurai, and retainer of the Second Prince (尊良親王, Prince Takanaga /Prince Takayoshi) of the His Majesty Emperor Go-Daigo (後醍醐天皇) in Japan. During the Genko War (元弘の乱. 1331-1333) of the Nanboku-chō Period (南北朝時代, 1334 to 1392), Hatanotakebun was given the latest mission, which was accompanying the First Princess of Prince Takanaga during her journey to visit him safely. During the journey, they were suddenly attacked and the Princess was taken away by their enemies and being carried into the big enemy ship. Hatanotakebun chased them in a small boat, and waved a fan in his hand, sending hand-signals for returning her immediately. Nevertheless, they refused to do so, and he realized he could not catch up with them in his tiny boat and get her back in the current human form and human powers. He declared out loudly that he will instantly become the Dragon God (龍神) for crashing his enemy and get the Prince back by offering his life to the sea god. He committed suicide by cutting his stomach with his own samurai sword, first from the left to the right, and then from the top to the bottom, then jumped into the sea. Immediately after he did this, he merged from the sea, not as a human any longer but as an Onryo (怨霊, Vengeful Spirit) with Dragon God's mighty powers in battle outfit surrounded by his own vengeful spirit retainers. He created supernatural fearful high tide waves in the whirlpool formation and deadly storm upon his enemy shop, which stopped the ship for three days and three nights on the very spot. The head of them finally let her go in a small boat (accompanied by one of them for rowing the boat for her). Then the suddenly the weather changed so that she was transported to the shore of Mushima (武島) safety. After that the Prince arrived the Prince Takanaga safely. With this, the mission of Hatanotakebun was completed, even though it cost his very life. This dramatic story was featured in great details in TAIHEIKI (太平記), a very popular war story in Japan. Since it was created in the literature, it become, wood block prints, screen paintings, radio series, stage theater shows, Television series, movies, etc. and entertained people in Japan and beyond. A Buddhist Temple, Kaiganji (海岸寺) was also built for calming the Onryō of Hatanotakebun, which later became the part of the Tenjin Shinkou (天神信仰, belief/religion of Tenjin). Also, Hatanotakebun's big spirit was believed to become the big human-faced "crab" -- Kabutogani or Samurai Warrior's Helmet Crab (aka. horseshoe crab) -- instead of one of over a dozen of smaller human-faced crabs with different reincarnation legends living in the same area (including the human-faced blue crab called Shimamura Crab or other truly tiny human-faced crab with mare one inch body, Heike Crab). This was how the Samurai - Horseshoe Crab Reincarnation Mythology, or more specifically, Hatanotakebun - Horseshoe Crab Reincarnation Mythology was born, and it was featured in great details in numbers of important and reputable books including "Honchōshokkan" (本朝食鑑), published in 1697 and "Wakansansaizukai" (和漢三才図会), published in 1803. Takeshi Yamada is a descendent of real samurai families. Incidentally, this samurai - horseshoe crab reincarnation mythology and other samurai - crab reincarnation legends have been widely known as well as often mixed up by people even in Japan. (Excerpt from the book, "Atlas of the Horseshoe Crab", by Takeshi Yamada.)
